Fire Protection at Twin Lakes/Marron Valley
Fires. As I sit on my porch tonight, I watch the haze of smoke dance over the blood orange moon. It is the smoke from fires, fires close by, that paints this eerie scene, and it haunts me.
The forest fires strike every year throughout the Okanagan, devastating every element of being in its path. Be it man, beast or plant, fire is one of the most aggressive and terrifying elements God has given us to keep us humble; a monster that is merciless and strong, causing excruciating pain to it’s helpless victims, sterilizing the ground it sweeps for years and destroying every aspect of ecology. We all know this-we hear about it as we watch the news in morbid fascination, and we all thank God it wasn’t us. So close, but not us….
I live at Twin Lakes. We have no fire hall, we have no fire protection, we have no fire department. And a very few care. It is difficult to think about, this ridiculous and somewhat embarrassing situation, so it is easier not to. It is easier to push this nasty blemish on our otherwise fairly intelligent community to the back of our minds, or worse yet, slide into a completely indifferent state of apathy. Some say they don’t even want a firehall here. How irresponsible is that? Selfishly living in the moment, these people believe, perhaps, that
a) It won’t ever happen; or
b) They have no insurance, so they are hooped anyways; or
c) They don’t want their taxes to go up.
Well, here are some answers to you, then. Yes-it can happen- anytime! Fire did hit White Lake area this year- did you know that? As you drive by, right above the pet cemetery just past St. Andrews, you can see where the retardant was dropped by air—a red powder left to remind us how close it came to our precious homesteads. All it had to do was jump three ridges, baby, and we could all say bye-bye to life as we knew it. No insurance? Then you are a sitting duck. Yes, taxes will go up, but the fact that insurance will decrease by half more than compensates.
And gee, if you don’t care about you or yours all that much, (oh, I bet you do-nothing like a crisis to re-evaluate that) perhaps give a moment to think about the abundant wildlife that depends on this country, the ecological balance of our fantastic terrain, our beautiful scenery, and the people here who do choose to care.
Let us all stop, let’s band together, let’s put our heads together and come up with some solutions. Let’s start preparing, let’s get organized, before our lives are devastated with a ground blackening catastrophe that will affect each and every one of us for years to come.
Tuesday, September 8th, 2009, 7:00 pm at the Twin Lakes Golf Course, there is a meeting being put on by a few who have been working very hard indeed to reach this goal. Let’s all get off our horses, out of our golf carts, come in from the garden, turn off the TV, get up from the couch and head to the Golf Course Tuesday night. . Great headway is being made-come join, come find out, come see what YOU can do to help out! Let’s make fire protection at Twin Lakes/Marron Valley a priority-and a reality- before it’s too late.
